5-Amino-1MQ is a synthetic methylquinolinium derivative designed as a potent inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). In biochemical research systems, it modulates metabolic signaling by interfering with NNMT catalytic activity, thereby influencing levels of methylated nicotinamide derivatives and related metabolites. 

NNMT is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes methyl transfer from S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) to nicotinamide and related substrates. Due to its metabolic role, NNMT is expressed in the liver, adipose tissue, kidneys, and other tissues. 

In preclinical biochemical settings, the inhibition of NNMT by compounds such as 5-Amino-1MQ leads to alterations in intracellular NAD⁺ salvage pathways, shifts in the balance of methyl donors, and downstream changes in metabolic signalling.
